Chapter 7

Viessa

In hindsight, the hours Rhys spent showing Falco and his men what to expect went quickly, yet it felt painfully slow at the time. They, in return, gave Rhys a crash course on how to use our unique weapons. Rhys and I barely had a moment alone, and now we’re waiting in the forest, my heart beating a mile a minute. It takes every ounce of my control to keep my fox at bay, her need strong to run to get rid of the stress.

Falco and his men are a few feet ahead of me, talking to Rhys. When they’re finished, the always grinning man I fell in love with has been replaced by a stone cold serious one. I ask if they’re done with the last-minute details and he tells me they’re all set.

"I’d still feel a lot better if you remained at the castle." Annoyed, I remind him Falco didn’t suggest that. “To him, you’re the Queen, but you’re more than that to me.”

“What am I exactly?” Grabbing my waist, he yanks me against him, his mouth descending on mine in a passionate kiss. I have no clue how or why he can do it, but his dominance claims the alpha within me, and soothes some of my worry.

"My mate and the love of my life," he informs me as he gently strokes my cheek, the sweetness of it all almost bringing me to tears. "If I lost you, I wouldn’t recover. Please, for the sake of my sanity, at least stay in the forest."

I wish I could give him that because I understand the sentiment as I’m worried for him as well. It’s an almost desperate need to protect. I shake my head, stating, "This is my country, my people. I can't let you and the others fight this battle without me." A sharp cry from above interrupts us, and I look up to see a falcon, though not a shifter. It’s a human breed, as we refer to them.

"That's my captain's messenger bird," Rhys says before giving a sharp whistle and extending his arm for the creature to land on. He removes the attached note and reads it, then turns to Falco to relay it. “They’ll be here at nightfall."

"Good. Shifters excel in the dark with our enhanced vision."

"What the hell is going on here?" I groan at my grandfather’s question, moving to see him and a small group of his soldiers coming toward us.

"What are you doing this close to the border? You never leave the castle grounds."

"Don't try to change the subject, Viessa!" He snaps, gaze sweeping the area. When it finally lands on Rhys, he freezes, his eyes widening while he bares his animal’s fangs. Without looking at his men, he orders, "Kill the human." They surround us, and that’s when all hell breaks loose.
